Description

University of Oulu is the second largest university in Finland with more than 15000 full time students. Education and research are divided into five faculties: the faculty of technology, medicine, natural sciences, humanities and education. The faculty of technology is the biggest having more than 4500 students. Faculties of technology and natural sciences, which work in close co-operation, together represent about 60% of all education in University of Oulu. In addition to the faculties, the university has several separate service institutes, such as Institute of Electron Optics supplying the research services of variety of electron microscopes for the research units in the university frame.

Laboratory of Fibre and Particle Engineering is an education and research unit at Process and Environmental Engineering Department in the faculty of technology. Fibre and Particle Engineering Laboratory provides research mostly for the pulp and paper industry, but in some extent also for other areas where particle engineering special needs are needed. The research focuses in three areas: (1) Fibre and particle analysis, (2) the behaviour of fibre and particle dispersions and (3) physico-chemical modification of fibres and particles. Number of personnel is 30, and 17 of them are full time doctoral candidates and post doctoral researchers.

University of Oulu works in co-operation with Ekovilla Inc (Kiiminki, Finland). wood based thermal insulations company, which is participating the Sustainpack IP. The company will provide machinery time for project purposes and will use the results of the project for the product development.
