Description
The University of Aveiro, located in the central region of Aveiro, 70 Km far from Oporto and 250 Km from Lisbon, was created in 1973 and quickly was considered one of the most dynamic and innovative Public Portuguese Universities. Nowadays the University has about 430 professors (with PhD degree), 11 000 undergraduate students and 1300 post-graduate students.
The Department of Chemistry is one of the biggest Departments of the University with a teaching staff of 45 professors, about 400 undergraduate and 100 post-graduate students. Undergraduate studies include Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Food Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as Chemical Engineering. Research is focused on Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, Organic, Food and Natural Products Chemistry and Materials Chemistry.
The Materials Chemistry research activity is carried out within the scope of the National Associated Laboratory CICECO, a research unit involving part of the staff of the Department of Chemistry and of the Department of Ceramics of the University of Aveiro, recently evaluated as Excellent by an independent scientific international board. Most of the University of Aveiro research staff participating in the SUSTAINPACK project belong to CICECO. CICECO staff published in 2002 an average of 4.38 SCI papers/person.
The University of Aveiro and its Department of Chemistry have a long experience of participating in national and international projects, namely at the European level, and in consortia with industry.
The Department of Chemistry and CICECO have the most state-of-art scientific facilities including full equipped chemical laboratories for organic and inorganic synthesis, chromatography (GC, (Py)-GC-MS, HPLC, GPC), liquid and solid state NMR (300, 400, 500 MHz), mass spectrometry (CI, EI, FAB and ESI-MS), microscopy (SEM, TEM, AFM), vibrational spectroscopy (FT-IR, FT-Raman), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA), X ray diffraction analysis, lass (B?chi) and stainless steel (Parr) reactors, laboratory press with heated plates and equipment for the physical and mechanical characterization of polymer and composite materials. The Department of Chemistry, has also access to the Paper and Forest Research Institute?RAIZ, belonging to industry which is full equipped with all the techniques for pulp and paper processing and analysis.
