Description

The contribution of the University of Girona to SUSTAINPACK-SP5 project will be executed the Laboratory of Paper Engineering and Polymers Materials (LEPAMAP). The LEPAMAP group was created in 1994 to enhance the research and development activities in pulp and paper science. Presently the LEPAMAP group is formed by 7 professors, 5 PhD students and two technical staff. Presently LEPAMAP researchers are working in the following areas:

1) Paper science: the research carried in this area deals with the improvement papermaking processes:

Energetic aspects of pulping: correlation of the energy required for the disintegration of recovered paper, pulps proceeding from wastepaper and different kind of virgin pulps with the solution hydrodynamics, fibre properties?..

Deinking of recovered paper: experimental and theoretical studies of the operations of disintegration process, hydrodynamic aspects of water-ink flotation.

2) Polymeric materials: the objective of this research is elaborate a biodegradable composite materials formed by polymers and fibres with high mechanical properties.

Physical and chemical modification of cellulosic fibres.

Reinforcement of composites materials with cellulosic fibres (modified or /not) of annual plants

3) Process Integration: Develop and apply process integration methods in pulp and paper industries to:

Minimisation of water consumption to tend to zero liquid effluent

Optimisation of energy consumption and reduction of CO2 emission.

Development of models of unit operations and simulations of pulp and paper processes

LEPAMAP group has three on going projects linked with the SUSTAINPACK project:

Title: Development of methyl polymetacrilat with special properties (MAT 2000-0188-P4-03)

Funding: Ministerio de Educaci?n y Cultura. Plan Nacioanl de I+D+I (2000-2003)

Partners: Centre Catal? del Pl?stic, Gerundense de Pl?sticos

Duration: 2002? 2003

Title: Development of biodegradable plastic materials by means of natural and modified polysaccharides.

Funding: Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnolog?a. Plan Nacioanl de I+D+I (2000-2003)
