The SustainPack Demonstrators in Detail

Demonstrator

Description

Key Breakthroughs

1
A corrugated box offering equivalent performance of current corrugated packaging but with lighter weight material, incorporating fibre-based cushioning, barrier coatings and a relative humidity indicator/logger Kraftliner box, cushioning and indicator produced: Example: mangoes
2
A carton offering equivalent performance of current carton board but with lighter weight material, incorporating barrier coatings and a 2D barcode Reduced material needs by 20% with constant delamination resistance and bending stiffness
3
A carton offering equivalent performance of current carton board but with lighter weight material, incorporating a laminated barrier film and a 2D barcode Improved starch-based multilayer coating with high oxygen and fat barrier properties
4
A barrier coated tray for chilled ready meals, sealed with a bio-based nano-composite film lid and incorporating a temperature logger Tray lidding material using nano-clays, a coated thermoformable tray material and a printed electronic temperature logger.
5
A flexible packaging film for frozen food, incorporating barrier coatings and a temperature logger Temperature logger capable of detecting basic 'abuse' events.
6
A flexible packaging film for snack products, incorporating barrier coatings and a relative humidity indicator Printable coated papers and an RH indicator made from renewable materials.
7
A cartonboard or micro-flute box for luxury goods incorporating a biodegradable polymer window, moving image and anti-counterfeiting technology. Still under development

Demonstrator 1 - a Box for Transporting Mangoes

Each year damage of vegetables and fruits on the European market reaches Euros 9Bn, caused by insufficient packaging. Mangoes are a case in point and can be damaged by exposure to heat or compression.

Box of mangoes
Correctly packaged box of mangoes - the SustainPack components consist of:
Kraft liner box
1) Kraftliner box developed by Smurfit-Kappa (SP2)
Cushioning material
2) Cushioning made from Novamont's MaterBi (SP5)
Indicator
3) RH Time Indicator (SP6)
